What’s happening to Facebooks privacy settings?

Seems this is a moving target and if you’re not actively checking what has changed in your privacy settings – you could be exposing more of your content from your profile than you thought. Time to review your settings and be informed!

From EFF.org

“At last week’s “f8” Facebook developer conference, Mark Zuckerberg’s notable quotable was that Facebook is “building a Web where the default is social.” To our ears, that sounds like “a Web where exposure is the norm.” To achieve this, Facebook is rolling out technologies that essentially put Facebook features on other sites, while those sites share data back to Facebook.”

“*.pps is not a valid Win32 application” error message

A client could not open *.pps files from an email. They would have to save it to their desktop, then open up the Powerpoint Viewer and navigate to the file.

I found a few sites that provided instructions on how to edit the registry to fix this – they did not seem to help them.

Quickbooks Pro will not start

I ran into a problem recently 04/22/08 with my Quickbooks program. I would click on the program’s icon to start it and get the “Quickbooks is loading ….” screen/prompt, then it would disappear and return again. Then it would disappear and never start. No error messages.

After researching my problem, through other forums, it was tied to a Miscrosoft .Net 2.0 update that failed. This was connected to this issue.

Specifically, if KB110806 shows in your Windows update as having failed, you will probably experience this same issue.

This has also affected Turbo Tax.

After struggling to figure this out and searching for a fix, Quickbooks Support has finally posted a solution.

Follow this support document, do as it instructs and your Quickbooks will open once again.

There is no need to uninstall Quickbooks before working through this solution. My computer had also downloaded .Net 3.0 – there is no need to try and uninstall 3.0 before stepping through the solution to KB110806. Just do it as it states and it should work for you.

My system is running WindowsXP Pro. Service pack 2.

Good luck!

So you want to create WordPress themes huh?

This looks like a great resource to figure out how to create my own wp site.

“Creating a WordPress theme from scratch is not hard. I’ll hold your hand through it. Tutorials on this topic have been written before and the WordPress website also has guides for you to follow. But are those tutorials and guides really helpful to you when you don’t understand the lingo? Even I got lost while reading the WordPress guides. ”

JavaScript for the WWW Visual Quickstart Guide

This is a great book available online –

“This page gives you access to all of the scripts in our book, listed by chapter and task names. We’ve given you two ways to use the scripts; if you want to see what a script does, click the name of the script, and a new window will open and run that script. If you want to view the code, or copy it for your own use, click the “View Source” link next to the task.” JavaScript for the WWW Visual Quickstart Guide, Tom Negrino and Dori Smith

Thunderbird Error: Negative Vibes from Hotmail

If you have received this error, it can be fixed. You may have to update your ‘add-on’ extension for Webmail and for Hotmail.

You can do this by clicking on “Tools -> “add-ons”

Click the button, “Find Updates”. Then select the Webmail -Hotmail extension and click “Options”. In the options dialog box, there will be three tabs. The first tab “mode”, will show you three options. Choose “WebDav”.

I personally have had to switch this from “hotmail Live” and back to “WebDav” because I continue to get the Negative Vibes error.

If you are still having problems, you could start from scratch and uninstall all Webmail add-ons, download the most recent ones and re-install them to Thunderbird. But knowing about your Options – “Mode” should be sufficient to get you working again.

Some web sites that you will find on this subject will tell you to choose the “Hotmail Live” option, which I have done as well, but just know, that if and when you get the error again, you’ll need to choose a different mode for it to start working again.

Under the “Pop” option tab, I chose “mark emails as read on server” and “download unread emails only”.

Under the Domains button, I have removed all of the domains with the exception of hotmail.com, live.com, and msn.com.

One more thing for you to do, and that is, to change the Account Settings for the Hotmail account in Thunderbird so that you ‘leave messages on the server’.

What this will do is leave a copy on the hotmail.com website, and allow you to save a copy locally on your computer in your Thunderbird email program. This works well if you have more than one computer and you want TB on all of them, grabbing copies of your hotmail.com emails. Also – if you have a problem with TB for some reason, you can still get to the web version and view an email remotely when you’re away from home.

To set this up – open up Thunderbird, go to “Tools -> account settings”. When the new dialog box opens up, highlight proper hotmail account, click on “Server Settings” and then you will see in the window details on the right, an option for “Leave messages on server”. Check that box. If you want to set a time for how long they are left out there, then choose the next box, and put in a number. I usually put in 14 – 21 days, so if I’m on vacation, they’ll still be out there.
